Staff / Principal Product Designer

Complex systems.Clearer decisions.

I turn fragmented product, service and operational systems into coherent, buildable experiences — connecting customer insight, product strategy, design, technology and delivery.

Seeking a permanent role

Where I add leverage

Breadth with depth, applied to the problem.

The value is not a long list of disciplines. It is knowing when to combine product framing, research, workflow architecture, UI, systems, accessibility, technical detail and operational thinking to get to a better outcome.

1DECISIONS

Product judgement

Clarify the real problem, surface constraints and trade-offs, and create decisions teams can actually build around.

2SYSTEMS

Workflows & operating models

Turn fragmented processes, roles, data and rules into coherent product and service models.

3DELIVERY

Design ↔ engineering

Prototype and specify with technical realism, accessibility and implementation quality in the loop from the start.

4INFLUENCE

Cross-functional leadership

Align product, engineering, operations and stakeholders through clear models, evidence, standards and practical facilitation.

Selected evidence

Scale and outcomes from complex work.

Verified outcome metrics where available, plus scope evidence where post-launch analytics are not available.

Unifying eight products without forcing a rewrite

Finplan and seven related tools had evolved with different navigation, action hierarchy and workflow conventions. The real problem was repeated relearning across a financial product suite.

The decision

Choose incremental convergence over either a costly platform rewrite or a cosmetic rebrand.

The system

A semantic product shell, shared navigation, predictable action hierarchy, workflow states and reusable product patterns.

Ownership

Product framing, workflow architecture, shared product foundations, hands-on product design and adoption across eight products.

Introducing AI without removing human judgement

Anomaly detection was only useful if people could understand why something was flagged, investigate the evidence and decide what to do next. The design problem was trust and action, not simply model output.

The decision

Use AI to accelerate investigation and recommend action — not to make governance decisions on the user’s behalf.

The system

Detect → prioritise → investigate → explain → recommend → review → resolve, with confidence, provenance, thresholds and auditability visible where they matter.

Ownership

AI product framing, explainable interaction model, investigation and resolution workflows, prototyping and cross-functional collaboration.

Merging two product systems through acquisition

Decibel entered a larger enterprise platform with a different navigation model, component language and governance standard. A reskin would preserve architectural conflict; replacing specialist workflows would erase the product’s value.

The decision

Treat acquisition as systems integration: converge shared foundations while protecting specialist capability where it genuinely earns its place.

The system

A migration model for what should converge, adapt, remain specialist or be retired, backed by design-system governance and engineering collaboration.

Ownership

Product-system integration strategy, workflow and interface design, design-system convergence, alignment and migration decisions.

Recruiter quick fit

What you need to know in a few minutes.

A concise answer to level, role shape, leadership, technical depth, AI and the kinds of problems where I add the most value.

Career story

Strategy and execution were never separate careers.

I’m a Staff/Principal-level product designer with 20+ years across product, UX/UI and earlier front-end engineering. I work comfortably from ambiguity and discovery through workflow architecture, interface design, systems, accessibility and delivery — with earlier operational experience adding a practical understanding of service complexity.

Value proposition

I connect capabilities around the problem rather than treating disciplines as separate hand-offs.

Research, product strategy, service thinking, interaction design, design systems, technical constraints and operational reality are inputs to one outcome. I’m most useful when a team needs somebody to understand the system, make the decision clearer and turn it into something buildable.

Leadership

Influence, standards and clarity — with or without reporting lines.

I’ve mentored designers, managed small teams, established design and front-end standards, built communities of practice and aligned stakeholders across product and engineering. I lead through influence as readily as through formal reporting lines.

Technical depth

Engineering stays inside the design loop.

My background includes standards-based HTML, CSS and JavaScript, responsive UI, accessibility and direct front-end implementation. That keeps prototypes realistic, design-system decisions practical and conversations with engineering grounded in how products are actually built and maintained.

AI-assisted work

AI should accelerate judgement without replacing accountability.

I design AI into products where it improves decision support, and use AI in my own practice for synthesis, exploration, workflow modelling, prototyping, writing and delivery preparation. Human judgement, evidence, accessibility, trust and build quality remain the acceptance criteria.

Environment

Useful complexity matters more than sector.

Recent work is strongest in complex B2B, enterprise and high-trust environments, but the wider career spans telecoms, fintech, health, ecommerce, public sector, analytics and operational platforms. I’m seeking a permanent Staff / Principal or hands-on Lead role where the remit is broad enough to improve both the product and the way teams deliver it.

Selected experience

Depth in complex products, grounded in delivery.

Recent work emphasises enterprise and high-trust systems; earlier product, engineering and operational roles explain the breadth behind it.

Outside work

Curiosity beyond the screen.

Bikepacking, travel, making things and earlier operational work all reinforce the same instinct: understand the environment, work with constraints and make systems usable in the real world.

50 countriesTravel and earlier cruise/shipping experience shaped a practical understanding of service journeys and operational hand-offs.
Hands-on makingDrawing, printmaking, photography, cooking, small hardware projects and experimentation with new tools keep craft and curiosity active.
What I do

Turn complexity into decisions teams can ship.

I’m strongest where customer needs, business goals, technical constraints and operational reality all have to come together — and where senior design judgement still needs to stay close to the work.
